Week Nine: Wide World of Comics

I read some of Heavy Metal magazine and the comics that it had, as well as some of Moebius.

To me, there is a difference between the style of European comics and American comics. It feels like American comics are busier and rely more on dialogue to explain what is happening, but European comics are more graphic. European comics feel more like what we call a graphic novel, and perhaps they are one and the same.

The genres they cover are also different, but of course there are exceptions. There are sci-fi comics in America as well, but superhero comics are more prevalent. I quite like the way that European comics cover their material and the almost more atmospheric way it shows everything.

From the lecture: learning that Europe was more of the origin of comics is cool, especially from a North American centric view since I always thought comics = America. Especially with the popularity and prevalence of superhero comics these days.
